HAMBURG, Germany: Former Tour de France champion Jan Ullrich, who has
been dogged by doping allegations, announced his retirement from
cycling Monday.

The 33-year-old German, who won the Tour in 1997, said he will stay in
cycling as a consultant for the Austrian-based Volksbank team.

"I am ending my active career," he said.

Ullrich has been under investigation for several months for alleged
links to a Spanish doping scandal, but has not been charged. He has

That's the logical conclusion all right... DNA results must be due
back soon. Of course, if he is found guilty he could theoretically be
banned from working with teams, unless he does a pseudo PR role like
Museeuw did...
