in the market for a trick set of wheels, but don't want to spend a
fortune for wheels that can only do one thing? Well, how about a set
of wheels that can do anything? Anything, well, almost.
I've got a set (three, actually) of Zipp 404 dimpled rims (the road
rims, not the brake track-less track rims) built up on Shimano Ultegra
hubs, 28h rear(s) and 24h front. They were built up custom for me
earlier this spring and have been very lightly used. The wheels are in
perfect shape and the tires show very little wear.
The front is laced radially, the rears are 2x, butted spokes front and
rear. One of the rear wheels has the cassette body replaced with a
Surly fixxer cassette hub converter to use on the track, the other
still takes cassettes.
I've got Conti Sprinters (the gatorskin versions) mounted on all three
wheels. So, I can use the front with the cassette rear for road events
or pair up the front with the converted rear on the track. W/ the
higher spoke count than what come on the stock Zipp wheels, these
wheels are much stiffer than the stock versions and therefore work
well even under someone of my girth.
I suppose if I wanted to, I could peel the tires off and use the
wheels for cyclocross racing. Now, that's a versatile set of wheels.

For the wheel that's converted to a track wheel, I'll include the
cassette body (it's brand new, never used) so you can easily convert
it from road to track if you wish.
