  1. Hi

What exactly is measured to get the second measurement on a tyre, ie
    26x1.8 26x2.1 etc

I have some old Tioga psychos that say 26x1.8 but are wider than my
    current Panaracer Dart 26x2.1!

I'm interested as I would like to try some Panaracer Cinder 2.25 but
not sure whether they are too wide. Does anyone know the width between
the chainstays needed for this tyre?

    Many thanks
    Pete

It's supposed to be the depth or height of the tyre from top of rim to top
of tyre, which will roughly equal (or be a bit smaller than) the width at
tyre sidewall, when the tyre is on a most suitable rim.

But as you've found out, these numbers are not reliable and the reality
varies from one make and model to another.

Sorry I don't know that particular model but I know old versions of
Panaracer Pasela 700c were about a "size" smaller than stated. They have
since corrected the labels on this model (and maybe others?).

This is not a direct answer to your question but:

If you take a look at http://www.mtbtires.com/specs/panaracer.html they
reckon that the tyre is 56.4 mm when mounted on a Mavic 261 @ 40 psi. The
width required between your chainstays will depend on how much mud you
    intend to stick to them.
