  1. I have Sora STI shifters with a triple crank 52/38/24 can I convert the shifter to a compact double 50/34 easily?

  2. yes.

  3. I looked into doing something similar (going from a 105- 52/42/30 to a regular double). I did not end up doing it, as the cost was fairly high. I would not have needed to replace the controllers, but I would have needed a new bottom bracket and likely at very least a new front derailleur. What I ended up doing instead was replacing the 42 with a 39 and locking out the 30 (I could no longer shift into it - this was to prevent chain drops, which were fairly common on the original set up) I could have taken the 30 completely off and put in a spacer, but I figured taking apart the whole bb to get it off wasn't worth the small weight savings.

then I got a new bike and it doesn't matter now anyway 😎

  4. I was looking at Masi bikes and I noticed compact 50/34 was common on alot of their bikes but rather than buy a new bike I thought it would be cheaper to modify the shifter on the front derailer and get a double crank. I very rarely use the big and small rings of my triple because the chain line is not great when I go from big ring to big sprockets or small ring to small sprockets. I think chain line would be better with a double but if it's too expensive I'll just keep middle ringing it with my 38.

I honestly don't know for sure.

Shimano 9-speed STI shifters (except Dura Ace) are rated to work with either double or triple cranksets. They will work with a compact double crankset with no modifications. Sora STI shifters, on the other hand are listed as being double or triple crankset specific. I have no idea what the difference is or even what issues might be involved.

If I already owned all of the components, I would definitely try it to see if I could make it work. If I were buying parts, however, I'd buy components that were indicated by the manufacturer to work together.
