The same diameter as your existing threaded one. The only
possibilities are 1", 1 1/8" or (incredibly rare) 1 1/4".

The handling won't change unless you buy a fork with a
different length or offset than your present one. You'll
also be lucky to save a pound just by going threadless,
unless your current parts are unusually heavy.

Maybe 7 or 8 ounces, but I doubt that you'll save a pound
unless the existing stem's a boat anchor. As for handling,
there should be zero difference. The principal change will
be that if you trim the threadless steerer to the minimum
length useful for your setup, you will no longer have a
method of adjusting bar height without swapping to a
different stem. If you leave the steerer uncut and add
spacers, you can move the stem up and dpwn a little, but not
as much as is typically possible with a conventional quill.
(You commented that you're looking at a carbon fork; if it
has a carbon steerer, that limits the amount of spacers
permitted.)

Before you go any farther, I suggest a stop by your local
bike shop to check availability and price of all of the
various items you'll need. It would be wise to have them fit
the fork and headset so that you have some assurance that
the lower bearing is correctly seated and that the tube is
cut properly.
