I'm looking for a new bike and was all set to buy a Trek 7.3, but after reading some posts on this site I'm wondering if I should look into other manufacturers. Am I just paying for the name?
I plan to do mostly commuting/exercising on paved roads, but will occassionally be on a dirt path that's made for riding. I looked at the 7300, but prefer the leaner more mountain bike style of the 7.3 and don't need a "comfy" ride. By the way, I am 5'4" and female, but usually prefer a men's bike.

I use a Specialized Elite (hybrid) for this type of riding. I suspect its size is about 48. I also ride a size 52 road bike (Felt 80). Both bikes are quite comfortable 5'4" frame.
my wife and my neighbor and my son have specialized hard rock's Great bikes for about 350.00 they love them. you have to try one at your bike shop.

I bought a used (guessing it to be about a 2000) Specialized Hardrock a few months ago to get some exercise. It's an old school hardtail, and I didn't mind using it in the snow and I've really liked it. Now I'm pondering replacing it with either a new Hardrock or a comparable Trek, and am looking for advice on how others think the two compare.
