i am new to cycling, i got it to go around town...i was wondering if i could put diffrent parts, like a fork or new crankset or is certain parts only able to fit my bike

Sure you can, Trek doesn't make the crankset.Of course certain parts are required for a MTB but if you are talking about upgrade there is no problem.
I you are only going aroud town you may want to replace the knobby,if they are stll on it, for slicks which will be easier to propel. -

Tires designed for off road with rougher tread than road tires and they are wider. They are usually rated for lower air pressure.
