If it fits, and it gets you out on a bike, you got a great deal! For $50 you
got at the very least a decent rain or commuter bike.

If the bike fits, it is a good deal. Good Trek bikes of that vintage
usually go from about $50 to $200 on EBay, Craigslist, etc., depending
on condition. I have a 1988 400T
(http://www.cycle-tours.com/bikes/trek400t/index.php) that has many of
the original components. It is my primary commuter, backup touring
bike, and sees quite a few miles; so far this year I have put about
4000 miles on it. Nice bikes - clean it up and enjoy it! And if you
lived close to me, I could give you a front wheel to match the rear
(Maillard hub, Matrix Titan-S rim; I have a really nice set of Phil
Wood hubs, so the original is low mileage ...).

In 1987, I paid $100 to my LBS for a 1984 trek 400, if that's any guide.

$50 for a bike that fits and has a decent frame is a good deal. You may
invest a little tuning it up and replacing some worn parts, but it'll
still be way cheaper than buying a brand new bike. Sounds like a good
deal to me.
