This is my first post, great forum btw, regarding what may be a very frequently discussed topic, so apologies in advance, but anyway here goes:
Im looking at buying my first road bike, i have heaps of mountain bike experience but have always been attracted to road cycling and im a fair beginner in the area. Im looking at either a Trek 1.7 for about AUD$2000 or a Giant OCR1 for about AUD$1900, the price isn't a HUGE factor but is still a consideration. Intending to be used on medium and long rides on small to medium gradient. Basically my questions are: 1. Are these comparable bikes? 2. Am i getting value? 3. Is there a 'better' bike out of the two? 4. Suggestions? 5. Any other questions i should be asking, when at the shop etc. etc.?

Oh and is the 1.9 worth paying an extra $400 for?

IMHO the giant OCR1 is a better value; just based on the components you get. The next "better bike" is the OCR C series or Cannondale CADD 9. Of course there many others. When i was shopping the treks were typically $300 to $500 more for comparable models. Depending on the kind of rides yuo're planning things to look at are: Best fit (frame size), tire size (23 or 25 mm- larger tire typically is smoother ride), gearing (triple or double or compact double- chain rings) suggest 10 speed rear.

Don't get too hung up on tire size you can swop 'em later, not too expensive. Go with fit. The OCR here in U.K is called the SCR for some reason dunno why and you can only get it in 50 or 55.5 cm frame size. Unfortunatly for me the top tube length is too small or too big 🙁. I know I could change stems but I would prefer a frame without extreme stem sizing as I belive this compromises the designed handling. If they had 53.5cm I may have bought one. Oh well, as loads of other poeple will tell you, ask to have a quick test ride and see what feels the best.
