  1. Regular readers will recall how I stripped a tooth or two in our Sram
3x7 fited to our pino tandem. That's a 3x7 that Sram don't recommend
for tandem use, and that Hase don't fir to their Pinos anymore. And
that Dave Kahn said last time I fixed it "But don't you have the
problem that the repaired hub is just as not recommended for tandem
    use as the original?"

    Well quite.

Last Sunday's TC ride, which saw the triumpant trial of the new drink
bladder thing also saw tinging noises coming from the rear hub. I
stuck it in second (direct drive) and nursed it along, walking up
anything remtely steep. Which would account for us getting to lunch at
    gone two.

So I'm looking at options to replace it.

    A. Retrofit a Rolhoff. 6-700 quid. Ouch.

    B. Fit a triple crossover chainset (as Pino have now). However,
the stoker's RH crank has a built in freewheel. For this to workwith a
crossover chainset it would need to become the LH captain's crank- the
ratchet won't work if it was the stoker LH crank. (The freewheel
allows independent pedalling). This would mean a RH crank fitted on
the LH side with possible pedal undoingness. I'd also have to fettle
some kind of bracket on the LH of the Pino boom to hold the chain tube
    in place.

    C. Suggested by a fiend in the TC. Fit a 4 ring chainset (as
purveyed by the BoB). This will do away with the need for a crossover
chainset, keep the stoker freewheel out of the spray from the front
wheel, avoid the need to faff around with chain tubes.

Does anyone here have one of these 4 ring chainsets? How wide are
they? How is the fourth ring fixed on?

How about keeping the existing stoker setup and running the chain to a
crossover crank at the back? I don't know how feasible the chain
routing would be, but it might be worth a look.

The current setup is using a double ring at the back to connect the
drive to the hybrid hub/deraileur drive on the rear wheel. It's an old
pino with all the chains on the right. This is the old version
    http://www.radwelt-apolda.de/images/Hase_Pino.jpg and this
    http://www.kinetics.org.uk/assets/images/PinoFrei.jpg the latest with
a crossover conventional drive, though with a freewheel incorporated
into the rear left hand crank.

I think the cheapest and easiest option is going to be to sacrifice
the "middle ring" and arrange the gears to give the same spread
overall high to low but without much overlap between the rings.

    Alternatively how about this http://abundantadventures.com/quads.html
which will fit a 4th ring onto a triple. Illustarted on a tandem here

standard triple crank with extra long bolts and spacers adding an extra
chainwheel to the right. There is quite a bit of space on a modern
triple so the indexed derailleur misses the crank. This will accept a
similar or slightly smaller chainwheel with the chain going forward. You
might need a longer axle up front to restore chainline but try first
    with what you have

Thanks for the answers. I've now found time to take it apart, clean it
and have a look see. As far as I can tell, no teeth have broken off
anything, which is good. One of the cones was badly worn, so I
replaced it and its associated bearings. I used general purpose
grease fairly liberally (except on the pawls). I haven't had a chance
to ride it yet, other than up and down the roadr, but may get time
    tonight.

So it sounds like (touches wood) it was a false alarm.
