  1. I use Garmin 705 computers but need to carry my laptop with me when away to transfer and store the data. While looking at it then is nice, and having the laptop has many other advantages, there are many times when I would just plain not want to lug it around.

I have the SD slot occupied with maps, both here in Australia, and also in Europe (on different cards) and I would prefer NOT to use the SD card for anything other than my map data. Does anyone know of a way I could transfer the ride data off the 705s to another storage device to again transfer once I get back home? In other words a small temporary storage device. I use an iPhone and that probably has enough room for this sort of thing. It seems a perfect solution but I'm not sure if there's a way to get the data on to it?

    Thanks

  2. The 705 has loads of memory, especially when compared with the relatively small size of ride files. I don't think running out of memory is a big concern.

  3. Oh ok, I've never really looked in to how much it can actually hold. I'm talking maybe a month of data at 4-6 hours a day though?

I've also had occasional issues with them, well at one stage a LOT of issues but that's another story. I'd also be mighty [censored] if at the end of the month I was relying on the unit itself as the sole source of storage and needed to do a hard reset and lost it all.

It's easy to figure out if you're going to have a storage problem. Look to see what size an average ride file is for you. Memory on the 705 depends on when it was made. Older units--for example, mine, a 2 year old unit--have 500 Mb of memory. Newer units (I don't know when Garmin made the change) have 1 Gb of memory. Divide the volume size by the ride file size, and you'll get an approximate number for the number of rides you can store. You should also clear out--as much as you can or want--the ride history on the unit.

On the 500 Mb units, you could store 30 days worth of 16.6 Mb files. On the 1 Gb units, you could store 30 days of 33.3 Mb files. Thems be big files.

  5. Ok thanks very much, I'll look into that later today when I next sync my data. I always delete the old data off the units after each sync.

It's good to know that, as if I don't erase the data it will be a second source in case something happens to whatever I transfer it to. As I understand it, once it's full it simply starts over-writing the oldest data, is that correct?

Unfortunately however this still doesn't get around the issue of having the data stored just on the units, and unfortunately I've been caught out with this already with these things pooping themselves and losing data since the last sync.
