  1. Hello all. Just before last christmas I stopped rowing due to back problems. Since then I have started to do some cycling, looking for it to become my main sport. Until now I haven't really done much serious training, some rides and turbo training sessions in preparation for riding from lands end to John O'Groats. I have now joined my university cycling club and am looking to start racing. My MAP is 260 watts.

As a beginner what is a sensible starting training load (i used to do 6 sessions as week for rowing) and how quickly can I build it up? I can go on up to three club rides a week plus I have my turbo trainer.

Current weight is around 69 kilos (152 pounds) around 11% body fat and i am 182cm (6ft) tall.

    Thanks

What university are you riding for?

When I first started I had no idea what I was doing (some might say I still have no idea 🙂), so I bought Carmichael's "Performance Plan" book. I wouldn't use it for serious training, but I think it's excellent for beginners.

It has a lot of useful information and tips on bike fitting, riding position, cornering, pack riding, diet, etc. Also, it gives beginners a structured program that has a sense of purpose. I like structure and goals and without them I tend to slack off.

You could also look for a coach (someone like Ric Stern, who moderates this board).

  3. I'm riding for Oxford university cycling club. I think i'll start with doing the club rides and then add a bit of turbo training but I would be interested to see what other people think.
