  1. This is kind of a vague question but I'm hopping that someone can shed some light onto an answer for it. I'm a 17 year old 6ft 135lbs boy. Skiing is my main sport of choice with tennis as something to do during the summer. Since I can't play tennis any longer due to a shoulder injury I started picking up the sport that I use to occasionally train for skiing with; cycling.

I went out bought a bike, pedals, shoes, helmet, the whole deal. I go out and ride around my town daily, about 7 or 8 miles of very hilly terrain, equaling about 30 minutes of riding. My problem is this; I can't seam to get the speed or the distance out of my rides. My rides average about 15 mph and around 7.5 miles. After around 6 miles or so my legs just kind of give out. I pedal and pedal uphill but rarely break 16mph. What am I doing wrong? I try to pace myself, keep hydrated, eat right, and be consistent but nothing helps. I wind up going 7 or 8 miles and just die (figuratively speaking). I can go out and easily ski on a competitive level for up to 18 hours with few breaks but can go more then an hour on a bike. I’d like to enter in some races by the end of this season but doubt I will be able to do well in them at all.

Are there any suggestions or people with similar experiences (back in the day of course) that can help me with this? I know practice makes perfect but I just feel that practice the way I am doing it just isn’t helping. There’s nothing more frustrating (as I’m sure you all know) then truly working at something and not being able to get it.

  2. Cameron!

Hey bro, I'm a 17 year old cyclist as well. I'm sorta on the same track as you. New to biking, and would love to get into some races at the end of the season. I don't know if this will help or not, but I can relate my experience:

I bike 50 miles everyday after college classes. But when I first started last month, I would cruise at 18-20 mph and then die at the 35-40 mile marker. Same thing happened over and over. I was eating good before my rides and drinking plenty of water. I felt great for the first 40 miles, but then I'd hit a brick wall.

Anywho, I found that water just wasn't cutting it. Now I drink gatorade and I can go dang far on that stuff. I usually never eat while I'm riding, and I can do 60 miles comfortably on the stuff.

I dunno, maybe you're already drinking what works best for you, just thought I'd share.

Hope you stick around on this forum, it's nice haveing some guys our age to swap new personal records and what not.

    Take it easy,

    Tyler
