  1. Im new to cycling and i was hoping to make the bp ms150 in april (about 160miles-2days) or any of the ms150 rides ms150.org . i ride at least 20 miles every weekend but i dont think thats enough. ive thought about club rides and i might start doing that in a couple of weeks.

    any advice/help is appreciated

  2. Crikey, in that case, you'd have to really pour on the endurance miles to get where you need to be to survive those charity rides. My recommendation is to try riding a total of perhaps 200 miles a week and doing one LONG ride on Saturday or Sunday (50-75 miles) and doing shorter rides of maybe 20-35 miles on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. That should get you started but I'm not saying do this right away because you'd die if you tried doing that now.

Ok, based upon what I gleaned from your information and my suggestion is to slowly increase the number of miles you're doing a week now to be able to do over 60 miles in a day with little problems. However, if you're talking about RACING, that's a different story, I'm guessing that you just want to be good enough to finish those events.

Oct weeks, Tues: 5-10 miles, Wed: 5-10 miles, Thurs: 5-10 miles, Saturday: 30 miles.

November weeks, Tues: 8-15 miles, Wed: 8-15, Thurs: 8-15, Saturday: 35 miles

December (note: if possible), Tues: 10-20 miles, Wed: 10-20 miles, Thurs: 10-20 miles, Saturday: 40 miles. Note: Don't be afraid to take a week off for the holidays, it won't affect you too much since I don't think you're thinking of serious racing or anything.

January, Tues: 10-20 miles, Wed: 10-20 miles, Thurs: 10-20 miles, Saturday: 45-50 miles

February, Tues: 15-25 miles, Wed: 15-25 miles, Thurs: 15-25 miles, Saturday: 50 miles

March, Tues: 20-25 miles, Wed: 20-25 miles, Thurs: 15-25 miles, Saturday: 60 miles.

April, same as March but take it a little lighter the week of the charity ride.

The intensity of the ride shouldn't be hard, just go at a comfortable pace that you can sustain for all day and don't blow up and limp home. The point here is endurance, not speed since I didn't get the feeling that you were interested in cycling for competition.

thanks for the advice thomas.... i forgot to mention that i do ride about 25-30 miles during the week and i have looked at the recommended rides for the ms150 and plan on doing some of those....is it a good idea to get a trainer or just ride regularly on the road...if a trainer is the way to go then which one should i get. ive been looking at them and some are pretty expensive and i dont want to to pay a lot of money for one

  4. Ehhh, well, I don't advocate using a trainer all the time because it can get pretty dull unless you have something to distract you. I don't have a trainer because I live in Arizona and there's usually good enough weather for me to ride outside any time of the year. You can probably get pretty good trainers off Ebay so try looking there, my friend has the MAG3 trainer (I think), and it's magnetic with three settings and I've used it and it's fairly good.

Generally, I'd advise you to ride the road whenever possible because there's no good substitute for road riding and the variety of environments that you can put yourself into via road.
