Does anyone know how I can get a bike locker at one of these stations? I
believe Winchfield has some, and as I'll be leaving a bike there overnight
for the forseeable future......

Fareham has 10 lockers and over 75 (I've counted - sad) sheffield
stands. All chocka last time I was there. A sign tells you to ask at
the office if you want a locker but I suspect there's God's own waiting
list.

At my local station which has five lockers, there is a notice saying ask at
the ticket office.
They are very popular and there is a waiting list.

Good luck in getting one.

I use Winchfield occasionally -and sometimes pop in for a pint of Ringwood at
the Winchfield Inn :)

Maybe you can help me plan a route from Winchfield to Kingston? I don't know
the roads around there, but once I've hit Woking I know the way.

TIA!

Nick.

75 Sheffields!!!! That is a truly impressive number for a place of
which I've never heard. May I ask whether a) they are more than 1m
apart, and b) under cover? I live in hope that one day I shall come
across a cycle facility which is truly useful, well planned and
maintained.

I know the area to the west towards the green and luscious lands but not so
much towards the tarmac and concrete bits ;-)

I use Winchfield mainly as a station to reach cycle-training riders in the area
towards Eversley to the north and Crondall to the south. i also use teh other
stations along the line.

I would have thought the best way to Woking would be to take the lanes through
to Fleet then straight through Cove to Farnborough, Mytchett and Pirbright,
effectively following the railway line all the way.
The roads are not too busy except at peak times.

I did the Fleet/Farnborough section at 6pm on the Brommie yesterday and it was
OK.

Never heard of Fareham!

It's a wonderful place for cyclists. Commutable to Pompey or Soton -
with trains if it's grotty weather. Good rail links to London and, via
Winchester and Virgin XC, to points north. Almost pancake-flat (the
exception being the hill which happens to be on my commute).
Gob-smackingly beautiful and quiet riding country to the north - with
many hills, if that's your thing. I'm told that 10% of trips are made
by bike here but that's not as many as the 14% in next-door Gosport.

Although I have heard it described as "so boring there's not even any
grafitti".

Anyway, sales pitch over. Yup, the stands are all well spaced and all
under-cover and under-CCTV on the platform. The lockers are in the car
park, adjacent to the station entrance and involved the "sacrifice" of
two car parking spaces.

My first memores of cycling are sitting on my Dad's crossbar riding down
Brownich Lane to the sea where we lived on a strawberry farm.

We then moved to Highlands Road and where I went to my first primary
school.

....we then escaped ;-)

Well, I live within spitting distance, then - next to the Meon just
south of the village.

The strawberry farms are still around, though not in as great a number
as in the past. Most of the agriculture is early veg; a southern
location combined with growing under polythene sheeting means the first
UK grown crops of the year.
