I bought a Phillips Mule off eBay the other day. It was a bargain
considering the regular RRP. The trouble is the rear chainstay seems
too big for the clamp. I'm having to move it forwards a bit because of
the disks on my current bike. But the thickness of the chainstay is
uniform along its length.
I'm hoping, considering I haven't got my hauler at home, that it will
fit the cargo haulers chainstay.
Is there anything I can do in the mean time so I can use the trailer
with my mountain bike?

How about getting a bit of tube that that trailer clamp will fit, and
attaching it to the chainstay with a few pipe clips? It does seem the
Mule hitch tends to be unreliable, so you might do better to make up an
alternative attachment system from scratch.
