Thought I'd have a go at a trip report...
Southern Arans - May 25th:
Good visibility, overcast to start but getting brighter and
sunnier as the day went on.
Parked at the end of Cwm Cywarch (room for several cars at
SH 854185), and zig-zagged up Y Gribin (602m sub-Hewitt).
Then followed the forestry track towards Pen y Bryn-
fforchog, but had a nasty surprise when it came to an abrupt
end. Rather than turning back, I forced my way through about
400m of dense pine trees following my compass, and emerged
with ripped t-shirt about 200m from the summit.
Next skirted around the forest N and NE and up to the tall
summit cairn on Glasgwm, passing large quartzite outcrops
and tarn (Llyn y Fign). Good views of Cadair Idris, the
Rhinogs and Arenigs, and Snowdon in the far distance.
Fair descent to the top of Creigiau Camddwr then on to Waun
Camddwr ("new" Nuttall) - much less squelchy than last time
I came this way 10 years ago. Found the top 50m to right of
the path - I expected it to be within the larger 620m
contour 250m further NE, but it was obviously in the smaller
one at SH 84719 20510 before the stile. Carried on NE then
followed a row of fence posts to the top of Gwaun y Llwyni -
great views down into Hengwm.
Decided against Aran Fawddwy as I was getting pretty
knackered and I'd done it before, instead admiring it from
Drysgol, basking in the sunshine. Went on to bag the
insignificant top of Gwaun Lydan with its small white
quartzite cairn visible from some distance. Then contoured
back around the stream-heads on to Pen yr Allt Uchaf, the
last top of the day. Followed the ridge to the end then
dropped steeply down into Hengwm in the early evening sun,
and back to the car.
Didn't see another walker all day. Took lots of photos -
