With the forecast being poor for the North West and needing a fairly
short day we headed down to the Galloway forest early this morning.
Parking at The Bell Memorial car park at 8:30 we were soon hitting the
track to the deserted farm and on up the Shalloch burn. The "sleeper"
bridge is rotting and does not feel over secure, another year or so
and I think it may give way so be careful if heading over here. The
firebreak soon led to open hillside and an easy slope onto the summit
plateau, the trig point and on to the small cairn marking the actual
summit of the hill. Snow was lying and the strong wind was bitterly
cold, one of the coldest I can remember for a long time ! Too cold to
stop at the top we headed back to the forest for a snack and then back
down through the trees to return to the car park in 3 hours 30 mins.
A nice easy morning and back home well before 3 pm
