A short circuit around the Newlands and Coledale fells from Braithwaite. The winter scenery was superb especially on Wednesday, though there was less snow in this corner of the Lakes than further South. We even needed our crampons for all of 10 minutes, the first time we had worn them in years due to the bone hard snow which made it impossible to kick steps. The more extensive snowfields to the South reflected like white glass, a lot more tricky over there!.

Was up doing the Coledale Round on Tuesday. Grisedale Pike side of the round clear of snow whilst the Crag Hill side was covered on the NW side but little on the SE.
Put crampons on just after Coledale Hause and went straight up to the summit of Eel Crag on wide ribbons of hard packed snow. From Eel Crag to Crag Hill was a sheet of snow ice so crampons were necessary. Crampons stayed on until the col between Sail and Scar Crag, where I went down towards Braithwaite. Crampons back on 5 minutes later as the path was banked iced up snow. Taken of finally where the path breaks out onto High Moss.
