After a late night last night took a slightly later start time and
need a shorter day headed for Lochgoilhead. Terrific little mountain
but found some differences to the route description in the 2002
Corbett Book. firstly you can no longer park up the track at
Lettermay as there are signs all around with "No Parking" or "Park in
Village". We left the car in a wide space just to the north of the
road bridge over the burn and found 3 more cars there on our return.
Following the forest track the book suggests taking a short right fork
to the burn then a footpath up the SW bank of the burn. in fact the
forestry road which we were on now continues and swings right round to
the clear ground just below the waterfall on the Curra Lochanin burn.
this make very quick and easy access to the base of the hill. the new
forest track is not on my map which is a bit dated now as a 1992
version. There is a faint path up the West side of the falls and
then we stayed on the track that heads towards the Curra Lochain to
the point where a fence runs up the hill. again a faint path follows
this fence right up to the crags below the summit. Easy gullies lead
onto the summit area and the trig point lies not far beyond. We took
the first steep gully down towards Lochain nan Cnaimh and from that
vantage point could see that the firebreak leads easily back to the
road. Working our way down through the crags added a little spice to
the day and we headed direct for the burn coming down from the Lochan
then climbed about 60m through the trees to find the path in the
firebreak. Super little mountain with spectacular views in today's
clear visibility
