  1. A frosty morning with clear sky had all the promise of a pleasant walk. Today's walk was from
Harting Down car park which sits above South Harting, Hampshire and on the South Downs Way. I was
expecting it quiet at the car park, considering the cold morning ....... but it was almost full.

Anyway, Clare and I were soon on our way east on the South Downs Way. Passing along Harting Down, we
drop a little before a steep climb up to Beacon Hill. Still heading east on the SDW, we past Buriton
Farm and went up through Devils Jump and Philipswood Down. We soon left the SDW and headed southwest
down to the ruins of Monkton Farm. Continuing on a farm track, we soon reached the country lane at
Brooms Farm. Turning right, we followed the lane then right, followed soon after by a left turn onto
a footpath. This took us to Hooksway and the Royal Oak pub. Passing the pub (no time for a drink!)
we headed north to the south area of Beacon Hill. Up a track left brought us to Telegraph House,
then continuing right to the west of Beacon Hill we eventually rejoined the SDW below Harting Down.
A short walk brought us back to the car.

Some photos from along the route at the web address below.

Stats: Dist: 9.2 miles Time: 3hrs 20 mins Ascent: 1575 ft Max Ht: 781 ft Min Ht: 338 ft

Should be walking in the 'real country' next week ..... The Lakes.

Good, and hopefully it'll be a bit frozen underfoot. I was up there last Wed, went from south end of
Thirlmere up to High Seat via Arbuthnot thru to Keswick, 5 Wainwrights and miles and miles of
biblically proportioned quagmires. Godd is was wet underfoot, dry day tho! Heading back up there
    sometime next week.

Just booked my cottage and should be in Glenridding around 10ish on Wednesday, after an early start
from the south coast. Staying in Braithwaite until Sunday. The forecast is for some frost, possible
snow and very cold, about -20C wind-chill factor on the higher fells ..... lovely!

Watch out for the photos next week.
