On Sunday I did a charity walk over three Munros; Carn
an t-Sagairt Mor, Carn Bannock and the final peak was
Broad Cairn.
The day started at the car park just out Braemar with a walk
in to the Bothy at Loch Callater where we stopped to regroup
and grab a quick bite. Then we took the long ascent up the
path to Carn an t-Sagairt Mor, the weather started to close
in at this point with rain, sleet, hail and snow squalls.
There was also some concern with the clouds hanging over the
top of the peak. However once we reached the top apart from
a light wind our journey was in sunshine to Broad Cairn with
spectacular views over to Loch Esk, Dubh Loch, Eagles Rock
etc. Coming down Broad Cairn saw some heavy showers but
nothing to dampen the spirits.
Overall the walk took about 7 hours over a 17 mile stretch.
The path is fairly clear and the walk itself has some
dramatic views. Going from Carn an t-Sagairt Mor to Broad
Cairn was probably the best route as you are more sheltered
at the end in Loch Muick (also easier going down the
tracks). The Cairngorms themselves had a fairly hefty mantle
of snow covering the peaks.
