Most people celebrate their retirement by putting their feet up. But
not the indefatigable John Taylor, who set off this week on a
4,000-mile cycle ride that puts the Tour de France to shame. The
Newcastle Evening Chronicle reported that Mr Taylor, retired deputy
head of a school in Tynmouth, has set off on a three-month ride.
He will be cycling from the Northumberland coast to Scotland, then
taking a ferry from John O'Groats and touring Shetland and Orkney.
After that, he will travel through the fjords of Norway and Sweden,
catching another ferry to cycle through Denmark, Germany and Holland,
before returning home up the English coast.
The Tour du Nord is partly in aid of Macmillan, whose nurses looked
after Mr Taylor's parents before they died of cancer.
"I get sent details of charity bike rides a lot but they don't tend to
be very long," he told the paper. "This seemed a lot more physically
challenging and I thought it would appeal to people so I could raise
more sponsorship."

It has been a painful week for 28-year-old David Walker, who
accidentally shot himself in the testicles after drinking 15 pints of
beer.
Sheffield Crown Court heard the gun went off after he stuffed the gun
down his trousers. Walker left the pub after heated exchanges with a
friend over whose turn it was to buy the next round. He returned to
his home in Dinnington, South Yorkshire and left with the gun in his
pocket.
Prosecutor Andrew Hatton said Mr Walker's mother found him a short
time later, slumped in the kitchen with blood pouring from his groin.
Mr Walker was taken to hospital, and after undergoing surgery admitted
to police that he had nobody but himself to blame for his suffering.
As well as a five-year sentence for possessing a firearm, he will
undergo further tests to reveal whether he has been left infertile.
During the hearing, Judge Robert Moore said: "The gun could have gone
off anywhere, anytime, at anyone. It is only good fortune that it hit
him." The court heard that Mr Walker had bought the gun for his own
safety four years ago after being attacked by his then lover's
ex-boyfriend.
