Torque won't stay zeroed!

Batteries might help... That would be the first thing that I would check.

I had this same problem last year and had to ship it back to Saris for a rebuild.

It was one of the first SL units...

I would try turning off the autozero function. Sounds like that could be causing drift (but even so you may have a problem that requires service).
