to hull and back

Hi there,

I can't advise on any routes on the other side but would advise you to avoid using the New Hedon
Road to get to the terminal from Hull town centre. Hundreds of millions have been spent un upgrading
the old road and the 'cycle facilities' are the usual farce of bits of footpath without any means
being provided to cross the arms of some very busy new roundabouts. Many of the 'cycle paths'
haven't even being put in yet despite the fact the road was officially opened a while ago...

There IS a good riverside path running between 'The Deep' and the ferry terminal. This is marked as
being the Trans Pennine Trail pedestrians route. Only real downside is that the lockgates may be
open but you can always walk along the lock side to the inner set. Also don't ride over the edge
just before you reach the terminal as the path goes around a sharp corner.

The above riverside path is very pleasant to cycle on but not an 'official' cycle route. However, it
is not an 'footway alongside a road' so you cannot be given a fixed penalty for riding on it, nor
are there any bylaws prohibiting its use- there are certainly no 'No Cycling' signs on it which
would make such a bylaw enforceable. In any case Hull City Council has been trying to get official
cycle access on this for years and the money for the bridge at the Deep was provided on the
understanding it would be a cycle bridge, (although now it has been built 'The Deep' have objected
to the 'cycling' signs being put up on the basis they 'would look untidy!'😉, so use this route with
a clear conscience.

My wife, son and myself have done Holland and Belgium for the last 3 years using the North Sea
ferries and always had great trips.

Brugges and then Ghent are great places to visit from Zeebrugge. We have visited these cities before
crossing into Holland, going over the Westershelde by ferry and heading for Bergen op Zoom. From
there you have choice of routes to take you to Rotterdam or as we did, using trains to move to
another part of Holland.

Don't go direct from Zeebrugge to Bruges or as we discovered last year you will miss other delights
of Flanders such as Damme, Oosterkirk and Sluis.

We have always stayed in Youth Hostels which are usually modern and good value. They also have
secure storage for your bikes and can generally be booked on line. Some soon fill up in high summer,
Dordrecht is very popular and we have never managed to stay there.

From Rotterdam to the ferry you can avoid the last few miles of oil refineries and docks by taking
the scenic route through the 'parkland' on the south side of the Hartelkanaal.

One last thing, if you got out on one ferry and return on the other you pay the same as a return on
the same route.
