In my emergency kit I have a folded up spare tube. Fitted it today - GLOOM! the valve (Schrader) was leaking. Eventually I thought of tightening it up and it is now OK.
So the tip is : From time to time check your spare tyre actually works.
(The other possibility is that being tightly packed it gets worn through at some pressure point.)

You know I managed to read that as "didn't I advise inflating spare inner tubes with water annually", which left me wondering how you make sure all the water is got out before inflating them properly with air...
