I recently bought Time Impact S pedals to replace Time Criterium pedals
on a Campy crank. To my surprise, I was unable to screw the pedal on,
and it appears it may have a different thread. The crank is original,
and the bike is a number of years old, but I was not aware of a change
in the thread spec on mainstream pedals. Can anyone enlighten me on
this? How do I know what the threading is if it is not specified in the
catalogs or on the product package? (And, yes, I know my right from my
left, so that's not the issue. I have serviced every part of my bike
for years: headset, bottom bracket, axles, wheel truing, etc., and have
replaced many components.) Thanks for any advice on this.

That which follows is from Sheldon Brown, who is a reliable source of
online information. But it doesn't really solve your problem.
Rethreading either the cranks or the pedals is not for the mechanically
faint of heart. Find out which part is the French thread, and replace
with the common standard threaded part. You can sell the French-threaded pedals/cranks on eBay, but unless you
are truly heartless you must mention the threading. Someone may be
wanting those. Good luck,Ted

Thread Sizes
Most pedals have 9/16" x 20 tpi threads.
Pedals for one-piece cranks are 1/2" x 20 tpi.
Older French bicycles used a 14 mm x 1.25 mm thread, but these are
quite rare. -

Older Campag crank pedal threads can sometimes be a little 'tight'.
Have a bike shop run a tap thru both, pedals will go on fine. Not french threading , particularly since you said you had Time pedal
on them already... -
Thanks for your replies. I tend to think that since I already had
relatively new Time pedals, I probably don't have French threads. The
crank is about a 1985 Campagnolo Super Record, and this is the third
set of pedals, the originals being Campy Super Record rat trap type.I have heard that I might need the tap "chased" to allow tje crank to
receive the new pedal. One thing I neglected to mention is that the
thread on the new Time pedals has a black finish, like paint, on it,
which is probably gumming things up. No idea why anyone would put a
finish coat of whatever on the thread. Don't know how I would get this
off, other than screwing it in, and I don't want to risk damage. I
very much appreciate your responses, and if there are any more
thoughts, I'm all ears. -

clipless pedals...the French threading was abandoned before clipless
pedals appeared on French bikes.Sheldon "9/16 x 20" Brown
