Time Equipe shoes

if you can find some still in stock, carnac quartz is a decent shoe
and uses an adaptor plate so that it can work with either 3 or 4
hole cleats without adding significant thickness to the sole. the
problem is that even if you find the shoe, you'll have to find an
insert for the equipe as well. the plus side is that those who have
them usually have them on sale, since they weigh just this side of
a ton. doesn't matter to me, since i'm in the same weight class.

when i saw the writing on the wall for the 4-hole cleats i grabbed
a couple of pairs with inserts...sorry, but 45. since my diagonals
lasted 8 years, i'm good to go for the next 15-20 years.

I still use these pedals as well - and have a couple of spare pairs, at
least one brand new, so I'm covered on that front. Shoes, however are
another matter. Sidi is transitioning (has transitioned?) from a modular
approach using an insert that could accomodate most cleats (including Time
4-screw) to an integrated sole that only accepts 4-screw cleats with a bulky
adapter. Another poster mentioned Carnacs as - perhaps - still using a
modular sole with inserts for these pedals. I recently purchased some DMT
shoes - I've forgotten the model - but these also have a modular sole, Time
4-screw adapters and - for me - the added benefit of a great fit. Finally,
you should look at Time shoes. They appear to be following Sidi's
trajectory of an integrated sole without good adaptability for the old
4-screw pattern, but their older shoes (at least some models through 2004,
maybe later) have a modular sole and 4-screw adapter availability. I've got
a pair of these as well, but the closures aren't great (for my feet, at
least) and the shoe-adapter interface squeeks despite three different
attempted remedies. The Time shoes have an advantage of being either so
unpopular or so over produced that they are often available dirt-cheap as
closeouts - sometimes years later - at Performance. Look at the website -
sometimes there are so few that they don't make it into the catalog.

Well, just though attention to the cycling gear catalogs. Sidi appears to
be promoting a sole that lacks the need for an insert at the expense of
incompatibility with the four-screw pattern. I don't have inside info
regarding the trajectory of their plans in this regard, but my experience is
that once an innovation is adopted at the high end of the line, it tends to
trickle down to all models. I expect that may happen here, but have no
evidence, only suspicion based on the past.
