Wrong! But it might be the car side of things - borrow someone else's
lighting board to check?

Thanks, I just tried it again and after some wire wiggling and pulling
it sprang into life. Must have a dodgy connection somewhere.

A poor earth connection can often produce "Xmas tree" effects IME.
