Point me to a FAQ!
This gentlemanly 1966 Sears three-speed bicycle has a chrome seat post
that I'd like to raise a bit. Problem is, the thing is pretty happy with
being where it is. I don't want to grab it with a pipe wrench for fear
of scratching the chrome. I can't think of any other way to loosen it
and tug it upwards. Ideas are, as always, welcome.

Grab the seat and twist and upward after seat is really

Yes, but before that, add some Kroil or other such penetrant. At
intervals, add more oil and give the recalcitrant post several sharp
raps, from various directions. Use a rubber hammer or a block of
softwood betwixt [thanks, Sheldon] hammer and post. If you're not
really in a hurry with the project, time is on your side.

Wow. That took some serious tightening of the seat clamp so it would not
slip on the post! But it worked -- thank you.
