Well I've finally given up tinkering with the Tektro Oryx cantis on my
tourer and changed them for some short-arm V brakes. What a
difference! These things are awesome. I've tried a few tricks
recommended by my LBS, namely cleaning the pads, changing the pads,
cleaning the rims with a solvent, cleaning the rims with Scotchbrite,
and changing the length of the link wire. Only the latter really made
any difference. The new brakes provide a load of stopping power and
good control too with Shimano 105 shifters.
So going from bad to good I've got
- Tektro Oryx/105 shifters on 700C wheels
- all the other bikes I've had over the last 30 years.
- Shimano Altus cantis/levers on 26" MTB wheels
- Avid shorty V-brakes/105 shifters on 700C wheels
- Shimano RSX dual-pivot cantis/ RSX shifters on 700C wheels.
I've still not ridden a bike with disk brakes so can't really compare
to those.
