Well, it has started. The velorution will not be motorised..The
inaugural meeting of the Dundee University BUG was today.
So what happened: We have a chap from Estates who is on the travel
committee but is not a cyclist. In the words of the administration 'we
need cyclists to make the decisions on provision for cyclists'.
The BUG is now an organisation with a presence on the universities
in-house portal (we use BlackBoard) so we can post announcements, and
have a discussion forum. It happened very quickly as one of the BUG
members is the member of staff responsible for managing the system..
Initial projects:
1. location and type of bike racks on campus. There was a recognition
that different types of rack are required for different purposes. Some
secured in locked sheds, some public and we are getting a dozen cycle
lockers to try out from Dundee City Council.
2. Promoting cycling - possibility of support for NBW activities (june)
and ICFD which falls at the start of semester.
3. Input into provision of facilities in newbuild (of which there is
plenty happening).
4. Collective pressure for an IR176 scheme.
5. Potential for a 're-cycled cycles' scheme where people leaving the
University can donate bikes which will be made available to
newcomers/students instead of being dumped.
6. Reclaiming a bike shed from the Estates department - this could
happen in very short order.
7. Pressure at the University level to remove the new levy on using the
secure bike storage at the Medical school.
8. Pressure at the University level on the council to improve cycle
facilities in road engineering in Dundee.
All in all fairly positive, and it seems as if the Uni are keen on this
so things may happen..
