I seriously doubt that the UCI honestly sees truth and reconciliation as the way forward, especially since they've never demonstrated that sort of vision. No, I think they're nervous about the tone of their independent commission's statements of late and about the direction that the Armstrong affair is headed, as well as the rumors about what authorities might do. No matter what they're thinking, McQuaid, Verbruggen, and their droogs have shown themselves to be the scumbags people thought they were. Truth and reconciliation only addresses one component of the doping problem and scandals. It leaves the one question everyone wants answered--what exactly was the UCI's part in Armstrong's doping success--unanswered.

The silver lining for me is that now we don't have to endure some bullsh*t report by the UCI concerning the Armstrong affair. We all knew that wasn't going to work out anyway. Armstrong may realize that he's holding some pretty nice cards as far as McQuaid and Verbruggen are concerned. It's starting to look like the only way the UCI will be implicated is if he talks to USADA or WADA, or both. Since I'm not privy to the goings on in the mind of a psychopath, I can't even guess what he'll do next. I was also kind of hoping that McQuaid might come forward and rat out his former boss in an effort to salvage some part of his reputation. But, as Lance has taught us so well, these guys aren't going to give an inch if they think they have even a 1% chance of slithering out of this.

Judging by the questions that were being asked and the statements that were being made by the UCIIC, I think they were going to actually act independently. In fact, a number of commentators have suggested one reason that the UCI killed the UCIIC was that the UCIIC was acting too independent. It's unlikely however that the UCI would have ever given the UCIIC all the information the UCIIC might have requested. It does seem as if the UCI is actively trying to kill whatever motes of credibility they have left.
