i am looking for some road bike that I will be able to practice on and keep for some time. The Trek selling LBS has ana lmost complete selection of the Trek lineup and their prices are fair. and says they will measure me up when I decide

Should I care about the brand? Should I just go buy a Trek bike that fits me? What do you say?

I am now leaning on the Trek Alpha Aluminum series, any suggestions????

You'll get a lot of comments for and against a LOT of bike models & makes out there...

If the LBS near you only sells Trek, go for it. Trek is a nice bike. Lance Armstrong rides a Trek (if that makes you question Trek's quality). Giant is nice too, and so is LeMond.

Bottom line: test ride the bike you like before buying it.

If you plan to race, also invest in some good wheels and a good groupset. Choose your bike well & it'll last you for more than a season or two.

N.B. There are a lot of similar posts like this. Use the "search" function and put in "new bike" and see what comes up.

I used the search function, the terminology and the variety of model names leaves me twice as confused.

For Trek bikes, which section should I be looking at for road racing? Some redirection on their website would help. I spent 2 hours and went nowhere in terms of understanding. So which one would be useful for someone who plans to use it for road ccling and racing later on? i.e. which section of Trek should I look at? Theres road , comfort, triathlon etc..... confusing

I say lookaround some more and ride ride ride. The only way you will be sure you are getting the one that feels good to you is to ride a bunch. Your local bike store has only Trek because I'm sure they have the same problem my store does. Trek woud require us to do our store 85% Trek and Trek products in order to get product from them. If they are touting the benefits of Trek that is because they have nothing else to sell you. By the way Lemond is owned by Trek and so is Klein, but they have many exclusive models.

PERFORMANCE ROAD models are setup for racing, i.e. more aerodynamic posture, shorter wheelbase and chainstay for tighter response. COMFORT ROAD has riding comfort in mind - a more upright position and longer wheelbase. TIME-TRIAL/TRIATHLON bikes are more specific road bikes. It has a more compact geometry, steeper seattube angles, even shorter wheelbase, forcing the rider into an aerodynamic tuck for least wind resistance and maximum output. Specifically used in TTs and Triathlons.

For you, choose the PERFORMANCE ROAD if plan to race.
