Guess what everyone, I've just been for a v. short spin
outside on my recently completed (this evening!) single
speed fixed cog 30 year old wreck restoration commuter. Wow,
it's scary! Funnily enough the actual
starting/going/stopping isn't too bad but getting slipped
into the toestraps on the move has so far proved beyond me.
Not so riding backwards though, which is frankly bloody top,
for about ten feet and then it hurts...
What is amazing is how silent the whole thing is, hardly a
creak, scrape or clunk anywhere. Oh, and the direct link
drive type thing is a good feeling too.
When I started this project my main aim really was to build
something that looks minimal, elegant etc. the actual riding
the thing was (TBH) a bit of a laff. However, having been
out for a bit, I think I'll have a proper do in the week. On
the flatter stuff, natch...

btw I got a copy of "Zin and the Art of Roadbike
Maintenance" to help with the project, it's a belter. With
that and Sheldon's site, I feel ready to tackle anything!
