A friend of mine, who has been in the army, informed me the other day that
chewing liquorice (sp) stick keeps them away. You have to start eating it
some days before you go so that it is in your system and is exuded through
the skin, you can't smell it but the midges can.

I've been told similar stuff about Marmite. I assume you eat
it - I certainly don't fancy being smothered in it...

I remember seeing those on eBay (I'd done a search on
'marmite' - as you do) and it occurred to me then, as now,
what a complete waste of Marmite it was.

Don't know about that - I think I would prefer it to actually eating the

Liqourice stick, the raw stuff that is like a piece of wood, doesn't as far
as I am aware, but somebody will prove me wrong 🙂

Can do, yes. By 'licorice stick' though, does the OP perhaps
mean a stick of root licorice? That's unlikely to give any
problems except that not everyone likes the taste.

Thats the one, you can buy it at the chemist, or so he says 🙂

He reckons you will be alright as long as you don't swallow it, just
chewing it and spitting the residue out works just the same.

I chewed licorice sticks (root) for years when I was a kid and must have
swallowed a lot of it without problem

Or any health food shop usually, though Holland & Barrett
locally don't seem to stock them.

I can't imagine any circumstances when I'd want to swallow
bits of root licorice. I like it, but it's for chewing on not
    eating.

Me too, but deliberate swallowing of the stuff isn't something
I'd do these days. No particular reason - must be getting old
    I s'pose.

Spanish in the West Riding of Yorkshire as well. Strange because it came

I just knew it as root licorice. Pronounced 'licrish'.
