Perhaps if some winning track star was promoting this, that might get more attention. The guy in this article and the one in Runners World a couple months ago are eccentric types.

i think that's debateable. i am a very experienced runner being both unpopular and sarcastic throughout my life has proven to be my greatest training tool but i'm not sure which is better. when i run barefoot on the beach i find that the soles of my feet burn but when i run in my combat boots and full pack i find that my feet ache.
