  1. Thanks to the comments here I was able to handle a situation that
    occurred last night.

I was doing some fast time trialing (for me) and practicing some ride
technique and on the turnaround it winds to a one lane normally sleepy
    little dead end section.

Last night I was about 30 yds ahead of my brother and I could see a
    van about 200 yds back.

Sped up to reach the T-section that turned off, but there's a narrowng
and nearly a C-curve just before that. My brother got over near the
ditch and the van sped by, clearly doing 30 or more in a clearly 20mph
section or even 15 - for conditions. You can't see approaching
traffic, it's a dead end with high end homes - about .3 mile long
street emptying into more sleepy back neighorhoods, and a nearly
traffic free straight away (80% of the time.

So I took the road in the C-turn, clearly doing almost 17mph, and in
my position and height I could see ahead where a car can not.

So this person gets up near my behind and I catch these 'mommy can I
just run this over' vibes from his/her/its reptile brain. ;-p

At the last 10 yds, I have a place that widens a little and I was
heading to the left sharply anyway.

Good thing though b/c this guy revs it up to like almost peeling out
to get around me and as he about gets up to 20 feet from where I was,
I've turned a radical left onto my connecting street and the car is
still in the middle of his street revving like a nutcase, cars and
stuff parked on both shoulders, and suddenly there's no one there.

There's -no way- this van riding nut rides that road like that in
normal use...but, apparently, put a bike in that trajectory and they
    lose 50 IQ points. ;-D

It was a hoot. OK, I kinda suckered them into it a teensy bit, but we
were laughing about it all the way home.

( I never did see the driver through the window or anything it was
    about 7:45pm and slightly overcast).

Don't put too much faith in those vibes. Us bicyclists are prone to
false readings of that one, and especially those of us who frequent
rec.bicycles. However, this specific story does sound like the vibes
    were real.

Ever see the movie "Duel"? IIRC, the driver is invisible through the
whole movie (mostly due to glare on well-polished glass), and in the
end you see he's a skeleton or something...

Okay, my memory isn't too great.

I was just talking to my brother about this and he missed the finesse
of the positioning. He was in a wider area and near some grassy curbs
and abutting front lawns...in the C-turn, there is a nice ditch on the
    right hand side.

So he says: 'well you were riding in the middle of the road...'. I
explained that if I went to the side to let the driver pass at this
point, since he couldn't see oncoming cars on this narrow stretch, if
he suddenly encountered a car coming at him, his impulse would be to
jerk the wheel right and squeeze play me into the ditch if I were in
the wrong place, so I literally had no choice to take the road/lane
for about 200yds or so in this turn.

I'm learning how to herd the big dumb beasts a little, anyway. ;-D
