I used something like that but I put it under my suit since it tended to get too loose as it got
older. I think it helped but it took away some of that wonderful free feeling while moving through
the water, though if things get too cold for me I would consider getting another one. If you are
going to use a men's suit, it might be important to make sure you get it with a snug fit or else use
it under a sharkskin suit.

The sharkskin is a 1 piece suit and if you get one of those shirts to use with it, that might help.
When I am cold it is usually in my upper arm area and back of neck. Sometimes I have smeared
petroleum jelly on those areas and I also wear 2 caps. When I swam in an unheated pool in winters in
Virginia, I had to use a short wetsuit but I hated the lack of feel, though it made the difference
between my being able to swim and not swim. I used one of those shirts underneath to prevent
rubbing. Also, there are neoprene vests. You might try one of those. I used one on days that the
water was not quite as bad. And, if it is your back getting cold, maybe switching to backstroke now
and then during your swim to get your back under water as opposed to hitting the air might help.
