As the title would suggest, I sprained my ankle running about a month ago. Walking and cycling are fine, but I haven't run on it since to give it time to heal.
My biggest problem is in the pool, as the plantar flexion involved in kicking is very painful. I've been swimming with a pull-buoy, but I have to say that these things are officially the work of the devil.
Has anyone had any experience with ankle supports in the pool? I was wondering is a neoprene support would enable me to get rid of the pull-buoy?
I spained an ankle a week before the masters nationals in Cleveland and used an elastic support which helped a lot. It wasn't neoprene as I seem to have a sensitivity to neoprene but it was similar. I was able to swim with it but had to push off with the good foot for turns (fortunately this was a long course meet). Starts were a disaster as I could only push off on the good foot - it was the first (and probably the only) time that I ever had a negative split in the 200 breaststroke.

Have you tried different models? Some are more/less slippery or buoyant than others. Something else you could try is fixing you ankles together, for some swimmers it is easier to handle the pull-buoy then because they don't have to concentrate that much on keeping the pull-buoy at its place.

I don't know if they are bouyant enough for you, but my favorite fins are made out of buoyant material and I am able to use them instead of a pull-buoy (I don't like them very much either 🙂 with nearly no kick: Zura alpha fins by http://www.zura.com/ - they should be available in the UK.
