Guy selling a pair of sus forks with a short steerer says you can "just knock them out and replace" is this possible ๐ ---never seen steerers sold seperately.

aparentlly so,but none of our LBS carry replacements,I did see one supplier that supplied steerer 's for both steel and ali,so you would think the LBS Might have a couple lying around,Murphies law would mean they were specific to a certain brand.you would have to do some investigation at your LBS.'S -
I know you can with Marzocchi, but not with RockShox. Rockshox shaves too much metal off the crown on their forks.

You might be lucky enough to find someone who is able to carry out steerer extentions...just make sure its done properly and safely.
