Hi all, I'm new to the forum but have a lot of questions, hopefully you won't mind!
Every since I was in my twenties I've made a trip (sometimes by car, sometimes by bike) in late summer to the California coast, ordinarily around big sur or a little further south. I find its a good annual sabbatical, there are a lot of opportunities for cycling and other activities to help one relax. Last time I was there someone offered to sell me their local timeshare for what seemed like a fair price, though I avoided him at the time since I'm not one to make deals without research. Anyone have a situation like this (ie, rent a timeshare they use in the summer)? The more I think about it, the more I like the idea.

Never had one but understand that some companies sell you a specific week but the fine print indicates that you will get a week when available . I would research it carefully before signing anything

In the current real estate market I would not buy anything. Timeshares usually don't make sense anyway, but in a real estate bubble they are a sucker's bet.
Not sure about a real estate bubble but I wouldn't recommend a timeshare to anyone either. They sound like a good deal in most cases until you try to use them, then you find that your week isn't always available. I'm somewhat bitter towards the timeshare industry, I'll admit, because relatives of mine bought "on the bubble," as one might say, and got screwed over. In the end it was cheaper to pay timeshare relief to take the property than to actually sell it. Of course that's a worst case scenario but it could happen. I would at least do the research if you must buy a timeshare, but it sounds like you're doing that.
