  1. My wife wants to get back to riding her bike, but she gets a lot of pain in her pelvis and groin area from the hard-ness and narrowness of the existing seat, which is a stock standard road bike seat with minimal padding. Obviously we got to get something better. What are those seats with the holes cut into them like? What about a chinese style tractor seat!? 🙄
    Thanks

  2. Best to post the question in the Women's Cycling Forum. There are many discussions there.

Selle Italia Lady Gel Flow is the best I have seen, but it does not suit all women. Terry, Serfas RX Ladies are good too.

  3. The biggest problem with those occasional riders, e.g. those not involved in high intensity/long distance training:
they insist on sitting too upright. All their upper body weight is on the saddle.
And then they want nice thickly padded seats which does not solve the problem at all.
    Some tips:
    - ensure the saddle is high enough- to get the ideal height, put one pedal at bottom dead centre (BDC) i.e. 6:00 position, sit on the saddle, put the HEEL of the foot on the pedal...adjust the seat height until the knee is locked, i.e. that leg is straight... what happens is, when you are pedalling, each time the pedal gets to BDC, the knee is slightly bent (because of the angular difference when you are pedalling with the ball of the foot)
    - ensure your wife is not sitting upright, adjust the handlebar reach so she is leaning forward with upper body about 45 degrees.
She needs to be assured that this is actually SAFER than sitting upright. It will afford much more control.

Your lovely other half will need a bit of practice, as women are generally not as physically adept as us fellas but please persist, and she will reap the benefits...it is worth it, trust me.
Also...buy her padded knicks, from a bike shop, NOT "bike shorts" from Target @$14.99.
Proper knicks are sensational. If she won't wear tight lycra due to modesty (understandable), then save some money and buy a padded liner and wear it under nice loose shorts.

Good luck and I sincerely hope she enjoys the experience...
