Substitute for Shimano headset bearings?

  1. I have some non-new Shimano headsets that may need replacement of
    (cartridge) bearings, one is Ultegra 600, one Dura Ace. I will try
    cleaning/regreasing the bearings, but after that fails, can one
    substitute a less-pricey set of bearings, either from a "lower" (read:
    cheaper) Shimano unit, or from another manufacturer like Tange?

  2. I am looking for a clamp-on down tube shifter for my road bike. I presently
    have a "handlebar post" shifter on this rebuilt lotus. I have always used
    down tube shifters.
