  1. Hi,

Although not a complete newbie to cycling, have been doing a regular 15 - 20
mile commute in all weathers for about 12 years now & none of it flat :-( .

I am in the process of building a spare MTB from old bit's & pieces for use
in the really bad weather and have come across a bit of a problem so some
    advice would be appreciated.

I am purchasing a new frame, front forks & bottom bracket from an internet
store & am having difficulty in getting some rather critical info regarding
the size of bottom bracket & steering tube length. In my innocence I would
have thought that the sizes of both would be dependent on the relevant
    frame.

I'm happy with the diameter sizing on both items but have come up against a
brick wall with regard to the lengths. There are several different sizes off
bottom bracket width fittings & front fork steering tube lengths, now I
would have thought that these would be determined by the width of the bottom
bracket housing & the length of the steering tube housing on the particular
frame, or am I completely off track ?

The bike store has said that the width of the bottom bracket is dependent on
the chainset I'm using & that the front fork steerers come in 220mm & 240mm
lengths both statements still leave me totally confused as there are no
corresponding measurements in the frame description.

Any help would be gratefully received...

    Cheers

    FM

A bit more to it than that - I haven't been in the shop recently but from memory I have at least 10
    bb axles in stock.
