This time of year that many families explore student health
insurance for their children who will no longer be covered
under parents' health plans after graduation. There are
basically two types of coverage: college-sponsored plans
limited to specific medical providers in a geographical area
and commercial insurance plans that provide national
coverage. The most popular student health insurance plan is
the one offered by Assurant Heath. Most policies are issued
directly online and the average cost is about $700 per year.
This insurance does not cover student who travel overseas,
but that coverage is easily added at little additional cost.
Two tips if shopping for coverage:
1) If the student's college is in a different state than the
parent's home, compare plans for each state at
www.MedSave.com for the best deal.
2) If possible, purchase coverage before May 1 to lock in
lower rates before most plans increase prices for the
next school year.
