I've been considering upgrading a cheapo frame (a Ross 'Mt. Rushmore' vintage about 1993) to a 9-speed group I have doing nothing and turning it into a bad-weather road bike. (It's not geared for the road, with 48/38/28 up front and 14-28 at the back.)

The key is that there's no derailleur hanger on the dropouts. (Note that the 'claw' is rivetted to the derailleur so it can't be reused as a hanger.)
Is there an adapter that will let me use a modern derailleur? Or am I stuck with this POS group?
