  1. All swimmers achieve their velocity from technique in distinctly
    different ways, and the differences are as unique as a fingerprint.
    Underwater video on websites like YouTube and measurement using
    digital video, have clearly demonstrated a conflict in commonly held
    stereotypes about swimming technique.

    Because of those differences, there an easy yet precise method to
    individualize and improve stroke technique. It takes only about 15
    minutes to test one stroke, and can be used everyday in practice and
    at meets.

    I haven't studied the website, but this guy and his colleagues are the
    real deal.

    Years ago someone posted about their techniques of training swimmings
    using lights
    along the bottom of the pool to exactly control velocity. (At Buffalo
    with Pendergast)
    This system resulted in the improvement of close to 8% over the
    collegiate career
    of their swimmers while average improvement after all those hundreds
    of thousands
    of yards swum is only 2%. So I plan to check it out at some point.

    Changing subjects for a second, I have a question about technique. I
    have heard for many years that Popov was a front quadrant swimmer that
    spent much time doing catch up drills. However, someone posted a video
    of him demonstrating technique a month or so ago, and the video shows
    him as a kayaker. In fact, on dry land he is demonstrating a kayaking
    drill. My question is, did he change his technique over the years?

    Also, according to Larry W. FQS worked best with six beat kicks where
    the kicking provided the momentum while the recovering arm was
    catching the gliding arm. So, FQS was ideal for sprints where everyone
    uses at least a six beat kick. On the other hand, Larry argued that in
    distance swimming, where a two beat kick was more likely, a kayak
    stroke would be more effective because there are no momentum gaps.

    In sprints, the FQS supposedly increases aerodynamics. So, popov would
    be at a disadvantage being a sprinting kayaker and a six beat kicker.
    In Popov's case, less than a second would turn his stroke into a FQS
    increasing his glide and aerodynamics. Would this slow him down rather
    than increase his speed? Comments, opinions?

    I think sprinters kayak and kick like crazy.

    I just looked at some video of Popo swimming against Klim from 1999.
    His arms
    enter bent, immediately pulling on the water, and no glide. I froze
    the video on both
    sides when his recovering hand pierces the water and his other hand
    was below his
    chest - no catch up at all.

    I didn't find the video surprising. I strongly suspect the race was a
    50m, although
    I don't know for sure. Look at Thrope - he swam 100m to 800m in World
    class fashion.
    His turnover when he won bronze at the last Olympics in the 100 was
    incredible - he was stroking
    like mad. His turnover in his 400m swims was much slower, and ther
    was more glide.

    I'm not sure exatly where you're going with your question. Turnover
    rates increase, and body
    roll decreases as the distances come down. And kicks become bigger.
    So that all means
    less side lying positions, and instead, flatter postitions and big
    turnover with no glide.

    That's the nature of the beast (in my opinion)
