His guys, ive just picked up a new wheel aready with a single on it. The valve is a presta style valve stem but only has one or two shallow thread grooves. I have the adaptor peice to allow for a schrader pump but it wont thread onto this new valve stem. Any ideas????

You have a tube with a threadless presta valve stem.
So you have 2 choices, buy a presta pump or buy a threaded presta tube.

Obvious choices include:
- new tube (as noted)
- new pump with a Presta connector (as noted; or, check to see if the pump's connector/head has a reversible, internal rubber "donut" which changes the pump from Schrader to Presta & back -- that's usually the case with all but the least expensive bicycle air pumps OR "automobile" air pumps)
- buy a SILCA presta-specific/brass connector
- enlarge the valve hole in the rim to accept a Schrader valve tube
- new tube (as noted)

Are you sure the valve unit is not missing? It sounds like the valve has been removed and the valve stem has been left there.
