Where I get caught out the most is going up steep hills on the MTB. The rear end gives way and you don't have time to unclip.

downhill style MTB with 2.5" nobbly tires. he stoped turned the front
wheel to about 45 degrees held the brake and sat down...

when he took off it sounded like a tractor with bar tread!

so the secret to trackstands seems to be phat tires?

Phat tyres makes it a little easier, but low gearing and wide handlebars help more again. I don't have much trouble with my road bike and narrow tyres... think of it as balancing a broom upright on your hand.
